Amnesty International is a global movement of members and activists in more than 150 countries and territories around the world who fight against serious abuses of human rights and for the pursuit of justice for those who see their rights violated.
Thousands of people around the world rely on the work of Amnesty International which, through its research, mobilization and lobbing, save victims of torture, protects the weak from abuse, stop executions, gives a voice to minorities, free from prison people imprisoned unjustly, puts pressure on governments to change unfair laws.
Amnesty International is an independent organization for it has never accepted funding from governments and does not depend on any political ideology, economic interest or religion.
THE ITALIAN SECTION OF AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL:
Amnesty International in Italy started its activities in 1963. From the first small group of members, the movement spread to the opening of the national headquarters in 1975. The Italian Group today gathers almost 70,000 members and supporters, 2.000 activists, 174 groups in the country, 15 districts and 16 coordinators.
THE ITALIAN WORK OF AMNESTY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
Only in 2015, through the daily work 145 prisoners of conscience have returned to freedom in 23 countries and 370 people have been saved from death penalty in 10 different nations.
Actions that made these achievements possible were started after careful field observation: the researchers from Amnesty International are among the first to get to the places and near to the victims of human rights violations. From the research work are born the typical organization’s activities: campaigns, signatures, mobilization, awareness-raising, human rights education, lobbying and advocacy with governments and other parties to put an end to human rights violations.
